Now a part of the newly-amalgamated City of Kenora, Keewatin is situated on the northern shore of Lake of the Woods. It is is the first town you'll encounter as you travel eastbound from Manitoba into Ontario. From the east, motorists drive across the Keewatin Channel Bridge. Spanning the widest channel on Lake of the Woods, the bridge is the Trans Canada's Highway's highest crossing over a body of water. Keewatin Beach is a great place for swimming, with a beach and docks for the swimmers and large trees for those wanting shade. The Vernon Interpretive Nature Trails, located 5 kms down McKenzie Portage Road west of Keewatin, provide self-guided hiking trails through as diverse a parcel of land as you'll find find anywhere in Ontario, with sand flats, Canadian Shield outcrops, and a series of bogs and marshlands. Every species of bird or animal native to the region thrives here, amidst 100 types of plants. Points of interest range from a beaver house to an abandoned fox den to a 300-year-old white pine. The Keewatin Pot Holes provide evidence of glaciation. This natural phenomenon consists of four rock holes ranging in diameter from 30 inches to several feet, and go as deep as 7 feet. They are located one block south of Highway 17 on 6th St. Tours of the Mather-Walls House offer visitors a glimpse of the past through a restored, turn-of-the-century home. John Mather commissioned a Winnipeg architect to build the Queen Anne style Victorian house in 1889. Mather, a founder of a lumber company and a flour mill, was Keewatin's first Postmaster. The house contains an interpretive display highlighting the significant impact of the Mather family on the development of the area.
