Largemouth Bass - Fishing in Ontario While less common than smallmouth bass, several lakes in Northwest Ontario have excellent largemouth bass fishing. Largemouth bass are easily identifiable by the dark lateral line on the side of the bodies and a mouth that extends past their eyes. Largemouths are an exciting game fish that can adapt to a variety of habitats and they often prefer habitats similar to smallmouth bass and muskie. Largemouth bass thrive in colder, rock-bottom lakes as well as shallower, mud-bottomed water-bodies with alot of aquatic vegetation. Cover is an extremely important factor in the largemouth's natural feeding success - so when you're fishing for them - fish cover! Largemouth bass are an agressive fish, often eager to strike artificial lures, including shad raps, spinner baits, buzz baits and tube jigs. Crayfish (if available), minnows and nightcrawlers are good live bait choices. Just about any kind of cover is a happy place for a largemouth bass. You are likely to catch them along weedlines or right in the weeds, in lily pads, around sunken timber or near overhanging or fallen shoreline trees. Boat docks or other artificial structures also provide good largemouth hideouts. Contact our members below and ask for more information on fishing for largemouth bass in Ontario's Sunset Country.
